Funafuti Map Poster
Funafuti is an atoll, and from above it looks nothing like a typical capital. A slender chain of low coral islets curves around a large lagoon, with open ocean on the outside. Most people live on Fongafale, the main islet, which is so narrow in places that the ocean and lagoon shores are separated by only a short walk. A single main road runs along its length.
A large share of Fongafale is taken up by the airstrip, which shows on the map as a long, straight shape running down the islet. Houses and government buildings line the land on either side. Tuvalu is one of the smallest and lowest-lying countries in the world, and Funafuti is often mentioned in discussions of sea level rise because so little of it stands above the waterline.
