Arao lies in the far north-west of Kumamoto Prefecture, on the shore of the Ariake Sea and next to Omuta in Fukuoka. The coast here is lined with broad tidal flats, famous in Japan for their huge tidal range. Behind them, the city spreads over low ground and gentle hills.
