Assiut lies roughly midway between Cairo and Aswan, on the west bank of the Nile in Upper Egypt. As in much of the country, the map shows a sharp contrast between the river's green valley and the desert plateau on either side. The city fills a stretch of fertile land beside the water, with farmland, canals and villages spreading out beyond its edges.

Assiut has long been one of the main cities of Upper Egypt and a centre for its Coptic Christian community, with monasteries in the surrounding hills. Assiut University, founded in 1957, is among the largest in the south of the country.
