Berisso lies on the flat shore of the Río de la Plata, just east of the city of La Plata in Buenos Aires Province. On the map, the town's orderly grid of streets sits on low ground between the provincial capital and the water. Toward the river, the land breaks up into canals, marshes and wooded riverbank.
The town grew around two large meatpacking plants, Swift and Armour, which opened in the early twentieth century and drew workers from across Europe and the Middle East. Calle Nueva York, the street that ran beside the plants, still carries that history. The Port of La Plata and its canals lie along the town's edge, forming long straight channels toward the river.
Berisso holds the title of provincial capital of the immigrant and hosts an annual festival celebrating the communities that settled here.
