Bursa is shaped by Uludağ, the high mountain that rises directly behind it. The city cannot climb far up the steep northern slopes, so it has grown in a long band from east to west along their foot. The flat, cultivated Bursa plain opens to the north. From above, the result is a stretched, ribbon-like city with a clear mountain edge.
Bursa was the first major capital of the Ottoman state, in the fourteenth century. Its historic core, together with the nearby village of Cumalıkızık, was added to the UNESCO list in 2014. The Grand Mosque, with its twenty domes, stands near the old covered markets and silk bazaar. The Green Mosque and Green Tomb sit on higher ground to the east.
West of the centre, the Çekirge district has been known for its thermal baths for centuries, and a cable car climbs from the city toward the ski slopes of Uludağ.
