Centenario lies in the Huaraz area of Ancash, in the Callejón de Huaylas, the long valley of the Río Santa in the Peruvian Andes. On a map the streets form a mix of small blocks and irregular lanes on sloping ground. Main roads connect the area to central Huaraz, and at the edges the built-up zone gives way to fields and hillside.
The valley is framed by two mountain ranges, with the glaciated Cordillera Blanca to the east. Huascarán, Peru's highest mountain, stands in that range.
