Charlottesville sits in the Piedmont of central Virginia, with the Blue Ridge Mountains rising to the west. It is best known as the home of the University of Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson. His hilltop house, Monticello, stands just outside the city. Together the university and Monticello form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an unusual distinction for a city of this size.

To the west, the university grounds form their own district, and the Rivanna River traces the eastern side of the city.
