Cres is one of the two largest islands in the Adriatic and stretches a long way through Croatia's Kvarner Gulf. Its outline is long and slender, curving slightly along its length, with a steep, often bare coast. A single main road runs along the spine of the island, connecting a handful of towns and hilltop villages.
Near the middle of the island lies Lake Vrana, a freshwater lake whose deep basin reaches below sea level. It supplies drinking water to Cres and neighbouring Lošinj. The rocky highlands are also known for griffon vultures, which nest on the sea cliffs, and for long dry-stone walls that divide the sheep pastures.
