Rab lies in the Kvarner Gulf off the Croatian coast, a long island running northwest to southeast alongside the Velebit mountains. Its northeastern side faces the cold bora wind and is mostly bare limestone. The southwestern side is green with pine and holm oak. On the map this shows as an almost empty ridge on one side and a denser band of roads and villages on the other.
Rab town, the island's historic centre, sits on a narrow peninsula between two bays. Its old streets run in three long parallel lines down the peninsula, crossed by short, steep lanes, and four bell towers rise above the roofs.
