Fomboni is the main town of Mohéli, or Mwali, the smallest of the three islands of the Union of the Comoros. From above, the town lies along the northern coast, its streets spread out behind the shoreline, with the green, hilly interior of the island rising to the south.
The layout is modest and closely linked to the sea: a harbour area, a waterfront road and residential quarters of narrow streets extending inland. Mohéli is known for its marine park, whose protected waters and beaches, used by nesting sea turtles, lie along the south of the island.
