Mafia lies in the Indian Ocean south of Zanzibar, facing the Rufiji delta on the Tanzanian mainland. Seen from above, the island is long and irregular, running roughly north-east to south-west. The western shore faces the channel toward the mainland, and reefs line the eastern side. A cluster of smaller islands and sandbanks trails off the south-east around a sheltered bay.
Kilindoni, the main town and port, sits on the west coast, where most of the island's roads are. From there a main road crosses to the eastern villages and lodges, with tracks branching through farmland and coconut plantations.
