Zanzibar, known locally as Unguja, is the main island of the Zanzibar Archipelago, across a channel from mainland Tanzania in the Indian Ocean. From above it is long and fairly flat, running north to south and edged with white beaches, lagoons and coral reef. Roads fan out from Zanzibar City on the west coast to fishing villages and resort strips in the east.
The heart of any Zanzibar map poster is Stone Town, the historic core of Zanzibar City, built on a small triangular peninsula. Its streets are narrow, irregular lanes that twist between coral-stone houses, mosques and courtyards. At map scale they form a fine lacework unlike any modern grid. Beyond it, the newer city spreads inland in wider, looser blocks.
Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was shaped by centuries of Swahili, Arab, Persian, Indian and European influence, and by the Indian Ocean trade in spices, ivory and enslaved people. The island was once a leading producer of cloves. Freddie Mercury was born here in 1946, and the Jozani forest is home to the rare Zanzibar red colobus monkey.
