Fria is in western Guinea, inland from the coast, in hilly and wooded country. The town grew up around industry. In 1960, it became home to one of the first alumina refineries in Africa, which processes bauxite mined in the area. The plant and the town developed together.
This origin is reflected in the map. The industrial site is a large, distinctly shaped area of its own, while the residential streets are arranged in planned groups nearby. Roads connect the two and continue into the surrounding hills, following the terrain rather than a strict grid.
