Governador Celso Ramos is a coastal municipality in Santa Catarina, on a hilly peninsula north of Florianópolis. Its shoreline breaks into many small coves and beaches, and villages such as the Ganchos grew up around fishing. From above, the land is mostly green hills, with settlements strung along the narrow flat strips beside the water.
The municipality includes the small island of Anhatomirim, which holds the eighteenth-century Fortaleza de Santa Cruz, built to guard the northern entrance to the bay of Florianópolis. The waters around the island are also known for the dolphins that live there. On the mainland, the old village of Armação da Piedade faces the island across the channel.
