Hof sits in the far northeast of Bavaria, close to where Saxony, Thuringia and the Czech Republic meet. On a map, the town gathers along the upper Saale, which enters from the south and winds through the centre before heading north. Rail lines fan out from the station, and the built-up area thins quickly into wooded hills and farmland on every side.
Much of the old town was destroyed by a great fire in 1823, so the rebuilt centre looks different from the tangled cores of many Franconian towns. A long main street runs through it, lined by orderly blocks, while older lanes survive around the churches. The town is widely known for the Hof International Film Festival, held every autumn since 1967, and for cold winters that earned the region the nickname Bavarian Siberia.
