The Long Island Rail Road cuts across the hamlet, and its station, which gives the place its name, sits near the older commercial streets. New York Avenue, also known as Route 110, runs north to south through the middle. The hamlet also includes the birthplace of Walt Whitman, now preserved as a historic site near the southern edge of the area.
