Jhelum Map Poster & Print
Jhelum stands on the western bank of the river that shares its name, in the north of Pakistani Punjab. On a map the river dominates: a wide, braided channel with sandbanks and islands, crossed by road and rail bridges. The city spreads along the bank in a band of streets and cantonment blocks, with the low hills of the Salt Range country rising to the west.
The area has a long history. The Battle of the Hydaspes, fought between Alexander the Great and King Porus in 326 BCE, took place on this river, although its exact site is debated. Rohtas Fort, a vast sixteenth-century fortress built under Sher Shah Suri and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies a short distance to the northwest.
A Jhelum map poster shows the orderly grid of the cantonment beside the denser, older streets of the city, the straight line of the Grand Trunk Road, and the broad river curling past them. With so much open water and sand in the frame, the composition has an unusual sense of space for a city map.

River bridges
Road and rail bridges cross the river in long straight lines, carrying the Grand Trunk Road and the railway between Lahore and Rawalpindi.
Cantonment grid
The regular streets and green spaces of the cantonment contrast clearly with the irregular grain of the older city, a pattern seen in many Punjab towns.

Eng Kaart, déi eppes bedeit
Many families with roots in Jhelum now live overseas, particularly in Britain, and for them the river city remains a firm point of reference. A map of the streets they came from is a quiet, lasting way to honour that connection.
