The city's history explains its name. When the Mangla Dam was built in the 1960s, the old town of Mirpur was flooded by the reservoir, and a new town was built on higher ground. Many families from the area moved to Britain in the same period, and the links between Mirpur and British cities such as Bradford and Birmingham are still strong today.
