Khashuri lies in the Shida Kartli region of central Georgia, in a valley near the eastern foot of the Likhi Range, the ridge that divides the country into east and west. The Suramula River flows through the town. On a map its course runs through the middle of the streets, with neighbourhoods spread along both banks.
The town grew around the railway. The main line between Tbilisi and the Black Sea coast passes through, and Khashuri became a junction, with a branch line heading south toward Borjomi. The station and tracks form a strong line across the town plan, and the main east–west highway runs close by before climbing toward the Rikoti Pass.
Nearby Surami is known for its fortress and as a resort, and the railway crosses the Likhi Range over the Surami Pass.
