Kimpese lies in Kongo Central province in the far west of DR Congo, on the main corridor between the port of Matadi and Kinshasa. From above, the town is organised around that corridor. The national road and the railway run through it side by side, and a network of streets and plots branches off towards the hills and valleys on either side.
The land here is rolling savanna and farmland, broken by streams and wooded slopes, so the town has an irregular, spreading outline. Kimpese is best known in the region for its large evangelical medical institute, a hospital and training centre that has served the province for decades and brings patients from well beyond the town.
