Lecco stands where the eastern arm of Lake Como narrows and flows out as the Adda River, framed by the limestone mountains of the Lecco Prealps. It is closely tied to Alessandro Manzoni. His novel The Betrothed opens with a famous description of this branch of the lake, and many places in the city are linked to the story.

The historic centre lines the lakefront, with a promenade and an old harbour, while newer districts climb the lower slopes toward the saw-tooth ridge of the Resegone. Several bridges cross the Adda at the southern end of the lake, among them the medieval Azzone Visconti bridge.
