Luxor lies on the Nile in Upper Egypt, on the site of ancient Thebes. From above, the river runs north to south through a narrow green valley. The modern city fills the east bank in a close grid of streets, while the west bank is mostly fields and villages that give way to bare desert hills.
The east bank holds two of the best-known temple complexes in Egypt. Luxor Temple stands by the river in the centre of town, and Karnak lies to the north. They are connected by a long, straight processional avenue lined with sphinxes. Across the river are the Valley of the Kings and the mortuary temples of the pharaohs.
