Miabi lies in the province of Kasaï-Oriental in the south-central Democratic Republic of the Congo, not far from the provincial capital Mbuji-Mayi. From above it has little in common with a planned city. Its streets form a loose web that follows the terrain and gradually thins into tracks, fields and patches of woodland on the plateau.
The surrounding Kasai region is known for diamond-bearing gravels, and mining has shaped the economy and the movement of people across this part of the country for generations. On a map this shows up only indirectly, in the unpaved roads and paths that radiate out from the town toward the villages and workings in the countryside.
