D'Kaart
Nakhodka stretches for many kilometres along the eastern shore of Nakhodka Bay in Primorye, a long, narrow city pressed between steep hills and the water. On a map it looks less like a single centre than a chain of neighbourhoods linked by one main artery. Piers, cranes and railway tracks line the coast, and residential streets wind up the slopes behind them.
The name means discovery or find in Russian. In 1859 the corvette America, caught in a storm, took shelter in the bay, and the sailors named it for their lucky find. The harbour stays largely ice-free. That helped Nakhodka become one of the main Soviet ports on the Pacific and, for decades, the gateway for foreign shipping and passengers to the Soviet Far East.
Just to the east lies the large port of Vostochny on Wrangel Bay, and the coastline around the city is broken by capes, inlets and islands. A Nakhodka map poster traces that intricate shoreline in detail, from the bay's narrow entrance to the terraced streets above the docks. As a result, the sea takes up almost as much of the composition as the city itself.
The deep, sheltered bay that gave the city its name forms the western side of the map. Its long, curved shoreline is edged by piers and ship repair yards.
Hemmed in by hills, Nakhodka developed as a long ribbon along the water. Its street network reads as a series of connected districts rather than a single radial core.
Two hills near the bay, known as Brother and Sister, have long served as landmarks for sailors. Quarrying has cut away much of Sister over the decades.

Firwat Nakhodka
For sailors, port workers and families who lived through the city's Soviet shipping years, Nakhodka is inseparable from the sea. A map that gives the bay and the coastline as much weight as the streets is a quiet reminder of home, especially for those who now live far from the Pacific.
Every poster can be personalised with a title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example the name of a ship, a street or a year of arrival. Pick one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the maritime subject well.
