Russky Island lies in Peter the Great Gulf just south of Vladivostok, separated from the city by the Eastern Bosphorus strait. It is one of the most intricately shaped islands in the region: long bays cut deep into it from several sides, leaving peninsulas, capes and narrow necks of land that give the outline an almost branching look.
For much of the twentieth century it was a closed military area, dotted with coastal fortifications built to guard the approaches to Vladivostok. That changed with the 2012 APEC summit, when the Russky Bridge was built across the strait and the Far Eastern Federal University campus rose on Ajax Bay, on the island's northern shore.
