Nebaj lies in the Quiché department of Guatemala, high in the Cuchumatanes mountains. It is the largest town of the Ixil region, which it forms together with Chajul and Cotzal. The town occupies a valley floor surrounded by steep, green hills, and on a map the landscape is striking.
