Orsk lies in the east of Orenburg Oblast, close to the border with Kazakhstan, where the Or River flows into the Ural. The Ural, conventionally treated as a boundary between Europe and Asia, cuts through the city, so its districts sit on both sides. On the map this gives Orsk a divided shape: built-up areas facing each other across a broad river valley and its floodplain.
The oldest part of the city lies near the confluence, around a hill where the original fortress was built in the eighteenth century. Other districts, including the large residential and industrial areas of the Soviet period, spread along the river with long straight avenues and blocks of apartment buildings. Railway lines and factory complexes add large, angular shapes to the outer map.
In the nineteenth century the Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko served in exile at the Orsk fortress, and a museum in the city remembers him.
