Palani is shaped by a single hill. The Dhandayuthapani Swamy temple, dedicated to Murugan, stands on its summit, and it is one of the six sacred abodes of the deity in Tamil Nadu. Pilgrims climb the hill by long flights of steps or ride a winch railway or rope car to the top. Nearby is a smaller hill associated with Idumban.
