Portland's core sits on a narrow peninsula reaching into Casco Bay, with the Fore River and its working harbour to the south and the round basin of Back Cove to the north. From above, the peninsula looks like a thick finger of streets rising to a hill at each end, Munjoy Hill to the east and the West End to the west.
Both hills end in parks, the Eastern and Western Promenades, which look out over the water. Between them, the Old Port packs brick buildings and cobbled streets against the wharves. Much of downtown was rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1866, which destroyed a large part of the city.
Beyond the peninsula, the Calendar Islands are scattered across the bay, and ferries link Portland to Peaks Island and other island communities. The poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born here. A Portland map poster shows it all in miniature: harbour, cove, two hills and the islands beyond.
