Qūş lies on the east bank of the Nile in Qena Governorate, in the long green corridor of Upper Egypt where farmland ends abruptly at the desert. From above, the town is a dense cluster of streets close to the river, surrounded by a patchwork of fields cut by irrigation channels. Beyond the cultivated land, the pale edge of the Eastern Desert frames the whole scene.
In medieval times Qūş was one of the leading cities of southern Egypt. Goods and pilgrims left the Nile here for the desert routes to the Red Sea coast. Its role declined as those routes shifted, and today it is a regional town whose compact, irregular street pattern still hints at a long history of settlement.
