Ratekau is a municipality in Ostholstein, north of Lübeck and just inland from the Lübeck Bay coast. It is not one compact town. The village of Ratekau is known for its Romanesque fieldstone church, one of the old churches of the region's medieval Christianisation. To the north-east, the municipality borders the Hemmelsdorfer See. The bottom of this lake includes the lowest point of land in Germany, well below sea level, even though the lake looks calm and ordinary from above.
