San Carlos is a town in Maldonado Department, in southeastern Uruguay, a short drive inland from the coast at Maldonado and Punta del Este. It was founded in the 1760s by the Spanish governor Pedro de Cevallos. The first settlers included families of Azorean origin. The town still follows the planned layout of that time.
