San Felipe was founded in 1740 in the Aconcagua valley north of Santiago, and it still has one of the clearest colonial grids in central Chile. The map shows square blocks laid out around the Plaza de Armas, with streets running evenly in both directions until they reach avenues that once marked the edge of town.
The Aconcagua River flows along the southern side of the city, a wide stony riverbed that becomes a strong band on the map. On the other side, Cerro Yevide rises above the streets and offers views over the valley. Beyond it all, farmland and vineyards fill the flat valley floor toward the Andes.
