San Marcos sits high in the western highlands of Guatemala, at an altitude of well over two thousand metres. The town is the capital of the department of the same name, and its streets follow a Spanish colonial grid on the valley floor, with steeper land rising around it.
San Marcos has grown so close to its neighbour, San Pedro Sacatepéquez, that the two towns now nearly form a single urban area. The department is home to Tajumulco, the highest volcano in Central America, which rises to the northwest, and its slopes shape the landscape around the town.
