Târnăveni lies in Mureș County, in the heart of Transylvania, on the valley floor of the Târnava Mică river. From above, the town extends in a long band following the river, with a railway line running parallel, a compact centre of older streets, and blocks of flats and industrial sites spreading along the valley. Low hills, partly covered in vineyards, rise on either side.
Known in Hungarian as Dicsőszentmárton, the town has long had a mixed Romanian and Hungarian population. Its modern growth came with the natural gas of the Transylvanian Basin and the chemical industry built on it in the twentieth century. The Târnave valleys are also a traditional wine region, known for their white wines.
