Tonypandy lies in the Rhondda Fawr, one of the deep valleys of south Wales. From above it forms a narrow ribbon: the river, the railway and the main road run along the valley floor, and rows of terraced houses step up the slopes in long parallel lines. Above them the streets stop abruptly and open hillside takes over.
The town grew with the coal industry in the nineteenth century, when the Rhondda was one of the most intensively mined places in the world. Tonypandy is known for the riots of 1910, part of a bitter dispute between miners and colliery owners that became a lasting chapter of Welsh labour history.
