Zinder was the capital of the Sultanate of Damagaram, a power on the trans-Saharan caravan routes. The old quarter, the Birni, grew around the sultan's palace inside a defensive wall. On the map it is a knot of narrow, irregular lanes and compounds, very different from the wider, straighter streets of the districts that grew up later.
Granite outcrops rise out of the flat Sahel landscape around the city. These rounded rocky hills break up the street pattern and give a Zinder map poster its unusual features: dense streets stopping at a rock face, blank areas in the middle of the town, and paths circling around the hills.
Zinder was the capital of the colony of Niger until 1926, when the administration moved to Niamey.
