Gorodets stands on the left bank of the Volga, upstream of Nizhny Novgorod, where the river widens into the Gorky Reservoir. The town follows the bank, so its main streets run roughly parallel to the water with shorter lanes dropping toward the shore. From above it forms a long, narrow settlement with the broad river filling one side of the sheet.
It is one of the oldest towns in the region, traditionally dated to the twelfth century, and Alexander Nevsky died here in 1263 on his way home from the Horde. Gorodets is also known for its style of folk painting on wood, bright flowers and horsemen that gave the town its name in Russian decorative art. Earthen ramparts of the early fortress still mark the historic centre.
