Brüggen lies in the far west of North Rhine-Westphalia, close to the Dutch border, on the Schwalm, a small river that winds toward the Meuse. On a map the town centre is a small, dense cluster by the water, with the brick castle Burg Brüggen at its edge. Around it, residential streets loop outward before giving way to fields and forest.
The countryside matters as much as the town. Brüggen is part of the Maas-Schwalm-Nette nature park, a cross-border landscape of woods, heath and small lakes. On the sheet, the Schwalm's winding course and scattered patches of water break up the green spaces, and the roads run between them in long, gentle curves.
