Opole lies on the Oder River in southern Poland, and water shapes its centre in an unusual way. Pasieka island sits in the river, and a narrow canal, the Młynówka, runs between the island and the old town. Houses on its bank rise directly from the water. The medieval streets around the market square sit just east of this channel, compact and regular.
Opole is one of the historic capitals of Silesia and was once the seat of a line of Piast dukes. The Piast Tower, a remnant of their castle, still stands on the island. Since the 1960s the city has hosted the National Festival of Polish Song, held in the amphitheatre on Pasieka.

This narrow channel separates the island from the old town. Houses line it right at the water's edge, and locals have long compared it to Venice.

The rectangular Rynek and the streets around it form the medieval core. It is a compact, clearly defined shape just east of the canal.
