Puerto del Carmen is the main resort town on Lanzarote and belongs to the municipality of Tías. From above it is mostly one long line. A seafront avenue runs for several kilometres along the south-east coast, with hotels, apartments and restaurants on the land side and a chain of sandy beaches on the other. Behind that strip, the streets climb gently towards bare volcanic ground.
At the western end, the town changes character. The old fishing harbour, a small working port with a compact knot of lanes, still has the scale of the village the resort grew out of. On a map this end looks denser and more irregular than the long, even ribbon of the tourist front. Lanzarote's airport lies a short distance up the coast.

At the western end, the original fishing port gathers into a small cluster of short streets around a sheltered basin, visibly older and tighter than the resort beside it.
Volcanic hinterland
Inland, the built-up area gives way to open lava and farmland. The map empties out here, leaving generous white space that sets off the coastal streets.
