Hernani lies in Gipuzkoa, a few kilometres south of San Sebastián, in the valley of the river Urumea. On a map the river curves through the lower ground while the historic centre sits slightly higher, a compact set of stone streets around the town hall and the parish church. The Basque hills close in on every side, so the town is fitted to the valley rather than spread out.
