Liepāja stretches along a narrow strip of land between the Baltic Sea to the west and Lake Liepāja to the east. The sandy coastline runs almost dead straight, while the lake spreads wide and shallow beside the town. Between them a canal links lake and sea, dividing the city into its older southern part and the districts to the north.
Latvia's third-largest city has long been a port, and its northern edge holds Karosta, a former naval town built under the Russian Empire and later used as a Soviet base.
