Polokwane is the capital of Limpopo province. Its centre is a classic South African grid: straight streets meeting at right angles, with rectangular blocks arranged around a central core. The town was founded in the nineteenth century as Pietersburg and renamed Polokwane in 2005. The N1 highway, the main route from Johannesburg toward Zimbabwe, passes along it. That makes the city a natural stopping point on the long drive north. Peter Mokaba Stadium, built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, is one of the clearest shapes on the map.
