Salaspils is on the right bank of the Daugava, a short way upstream from Riga. The river runs along its northern side and is widened here by the reservoir of the Riga Hydroelectric Power Plant, whose dam crosses the Daugava near the town. On a map the water is a broad band. Two places give Salaspils a wider reputation. The National Botanic Garden of Latvia is here, with its planted grounds and glasshouses. Main roads and the railway toward Riga run through on an east–west line.
