Şemdinli lies in Hakkâri province, in one of the most mountainous corners of Turkey, close to the borders with Iraq and Iran. The town follows the floor of a narrow valley, so on the map its streets form a long, slender shape between slopes that rise sharply on either side. Roads leave only where the valleys allow.
