Yurigaoka is a residential area in the northern part of Fukuoka Prefecture, not far from Kitakyushu. The name can be read as lily hill, and like many Japanese neighbourhoods ending in -gaoka it describes a place built on rising ground. From above, its streets curve and step with the slope rather than forming a strict grid.
Hillside neighbourhoods of this kind in Japan usually took shape as planned housing, with loops of road, rows of detached houses and small parks set among them.
