North Haven
The island's harbour sits in a sheltered inlet on the east side, toward the north. The ferry lands here, and the bird observatory stands nearby.

Fair Isle Map Poster & Print
Fair Isle lies alone in the sea between Orkney and Shetland and is administratively part of Shetland. It is a small island with high cliffs along much of its coast, cut by deep geos and stacks. The north is rugged, open moorland. The south is gentler, divided into crofts and fields, and this is where most of the island's small population lives.
The island is known far beyond its size. Its name is attached to a style of stranded knitting with bands of patterned colour, and its bird observatory has recorded a remarkable number of rare migrant species over the decades. Most of the island belongs to the National Trust for Scotland, and it gives its name to a sea area in the shipping forecast.
A Fair Isle map poster is compact but detailed. The coastline is intricately notched, the main road runs south from the harbour through the crofting land, and a scatter of houses marks the southern end. With so little built area, the island's shape and cliffs take the lead, framed by open sea on every side.

Southern crofts
In the south, fields and scattered houses spread across lower ground. They form the only settled pattern on the map and are crossed by a few short roads.
Cliffs and geos
High cliffs ring much of the island and are broken by narrow inlets and sea stacks, giving the coastline a finely serrated edge that shows well at larger sizes.
