The historic centre forms a small, regular grid of streets. It dates from the mining era and remains the densest part of the map.

Diamantino Map Poster & Print
Diamantino lies in Mato Grosso, in central-western Brazil, on the uplands near the sources of the Paraguay River. On a map the old town is small and compact, with a modest grid on sloping ground. Newer districts and main roads reach outward into the cerrado and farmland.
The town grew in the eighteenth century after diamonds and gold were found in the local rivers, which is where its name comes from. Its location is geographically unusual. The Paraguay River rises in this area and flows south toward the Pantanal, while water a short distance north drains into the Amazon system.
A Diamantino map poster shows a colonial core in wide, open country. Around the grid, streams and roads trace across the plateau, and the page opens into large white spaces. It is a spare, calm image of an old frontier town at the meeting of two great river systems.

Paraguay headwaters
Streams near the town feed the upper Paraguay River, which flows south to the Pantanal. They appear as fine lines across the surrounding land.
Cerrado and farmland
Wide open land surrounds the town, crossed by a few long roads. The empty space gives the poster its sense of scale.
