Ipinda lies in the far south of Tanzania's Mbeya region, in the low, well-watered country near the northern tip of Lake Nyasa. The mountains rise to the north, and below them the land opens into a warm plain crossed by rivers draining toward the lake. From above, the town is a modest cluster of streets surrounded by fields and scattered homesteads.
This is a productive farming area, and the map reflects it. Roads and footpaths run out between cultivated plots, and small watercourses meander through the green landscape. The built-up area is loosely arranged, with a few main roads carrying most of the traffic and a network of smaller tracks between them.
